Sad news has engulfed the Italian football scene. Silvio Berlusconi, who was once the owner of AC Milan, has reportedly passed away at the age of 86.

According to a statement by Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani to the Associated Press, Berlusconi had undergone intensive treatment due to an infection since early April.

The former Prime Minister of Italy, who also served as the owner of AC Milan, took his last breath at the San Raffaele hospital in Milan on Monday (June 12, 2023) morning, local time.

"(Berlusconi) was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday, April 5, 2023. He was in intensive care due to issues related to a previous infection," said Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, as reported by the Associated Press.

"The 86-year-old former Prime Minister was in the ICU at the San Raffaele hospital in Milan, where he regularly received treatment," added Antonio Tajani in his explanation.

It is worth noting that Berlusconi had experienced several health problems in recent years. One of the most significant was his battle with COVID-19 in 2020, from which he managed to recover.

Additionally, the former owner of AC Milan was known to have been using a pacemaker for a long time. He had also undergone surgery to replace the aortic valve in 2016, battled prostate cancer, and was hospitalized due to a urinary tract infection in January 2022.

Silvio Berlusconi's Legacy in Italian Football

Silvio Berlusconi was not only known as a former prime minister and tycoon but also gained prominence as the owner of the Serie A giants, AC Milan.

The 86-year-old, who passed away, first acquired the Rossoneri in 1986. Under his leadership, AC Milan enjoyed considerable success in the world of football.

They won the European Cup in the 1988/1989 season, defeating Barcelona in the final of the Champions League in 1993/1994, and achieved a remarkable 6-0 victory over their city rivals Inter Milan in the Serie A in the 2000/2001 season.

After AC Milan, Silvio Berlusconi Became the Owner of Monza

Following his departure from AC Milan, Silvio Berlusconi continued his involvement in Italian football as the owner of AC Monza.

Interestingly, under Berlusconi's ownership, significant events unfolded for the club. Monza secured promotion to Serie A in 2022, earning them a place in the top tier for the 2022/2023 season.

This marked Monza's first-ever appearance in Serie A. They joined Lecce and Cremonese, who also earned promotion the previous year.

Furthermore, Monza has confirmed their participation in the top tier of Italian football for the 2023/2024 season. They managed to avoid relegation, finishing in 11th place with a total of 52 points from 38 matches this season.
