Kylian Mbappe emerged as the savior for the French National Team in their match against Greece on Tuesday, June 20, 2023. The 24-year-old player's solitary goal secured a 1-0 victory for Les Bleus in the ongoing Euro 2024 qualifiers.

Playing on their home turf, the Stade de France, Les Bleus dominated the game from the start. The French national team repeatedly bombarded the opponent's defense. In the 25th minute, Randal Kolo had a golden opportunity from Mbappe's cross. Unfortunately, Kolo's powerful header narrowly missed the Greek goalpost.

After three fouls inside the penalty box were ignored by the referee, France finally received a penalty in the 55th minute. The referee pointed to the spot after Antoine Griezman was fouled hard by Mavropanos. Greek goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos initially saved Mbappe's shot as he stepped up to take the penalty. However, the penalty had to be retaken as Vlachodimos had left his goal line too early. Mbappe finally scored on his second attempt.

France had a chance to widen the lead further when Greece lost Konstantinos Mavropanos in the 69th minute. However, France failed to capitalize on the numerical advantage and could only secure a 1-0 victory until the end of the match. This result further solidified France's position at the top of Group B in the Euro 2024 qualifying stage, with 12 points from 3 matches.

Not only that, Mbappe is now recognized as the French player with the most goals for both club and national team. With a tally of 54 goals this season, he surpassed Just Fontaine's record set in 1957-58.

This achievement also puts Mbappe on par with Manchester City striker Erling Haaland. When Norway faced Cyprus on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, Haaland had the potential to become the top scorer among players competing in the top five European leagues.

Meanwhile, French coach Didier Deschamps acknowledged that his team had performed to their maximum potential in the match.

"This has been a long season for the players," said Deschamps.

"We did what we had to do to win this game, even though we regret not scoring more goals because you never know what can happen towards the end of the match," he added.

More Impressed with the Victory against Gibraltar

Eduardo Camavinga expressed his dissatisfaction with France's victory. The young player was more interested in replicating their 3-0 win against Gibraltar on June 17. According to him, France displayed a much more organized performance in that game.

"We wanted to build on our victory against Gibraltar, in front of our home fans," he said.

"We knew they would be difficult to break down, but we did the job, securing three points without conceding a single goal. Now, it's time for a vacation," he added.
