EA Ventures into Black Panther Game Development, Promising an Epic Single-Player Experience

Black Panther
Electronic Arts, also known as EA, has announced its plan to develop a game adaptation of the popular Marvel superhero, Black Panther. While there are no specific details available yet, it has been revealed that the game will be a single-player, third-person experience.

According to reports from The Verge, EA has entrusted the development to the studio EA Cliffhanger Games, in collaboration with Marvel Games.

EA Cliffhanger, led by Kevin Stephens, previously oversaw the development of Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor during his time at Monolith Productions.

Citing the official Marvel website on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, the team working on the game has also been involved in the development of titles such as Halo Infinite, God of War, and Call of Duty.

"We are dedicated to delivering a definitive and authentic Black Panther experience to fans, giving them more agency and control over their narrative than they have ever experienced in a story-based video game," said Stephens.

"Wakanda is a rich sandbox for a Super Hero, and our mission is to develop an epic world for players who love Black Panther and want to explore the world of Wakanda as much as we do," he added.

The partnership with Marvel Games aims "to ensure that we create every aspect of Wakanda, its technology, its heroes, and our own original story with the attention to detail and authenticity that the world of Black Panther deserves."

Further information regarding specific details, release dates, and supported platforms for the game is yet to be revealed.

Other Marvel Games in the Pipeline

Last year, EA and Marvel announced a partnership to develop at least three game titles as part of an ongoing collaboration.

Marvel's parent company, Disney, has also collaborated with several major studios and publishers to create games based on the superhero franchise.

The most notable among these is Insomniac's Spider-Man series, which will also feature a Wolverine game. Additionally, EA's Motive Studio is working on an Iron Man game, and Eidos Montreal is developing Guardians of the Galaxy.

Marvel and Skydance New Media have also announced an untitled narrative-based game set in World War II, featuring four playable heroes.

These heroes include a young Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America, T'Challa's grandfather as the Black Panther during World War II, Howling Commandos member Gabriel Jones, and Nanali, the leader of the Wakandan Spy Network.

The developers didn't hold back and showcased extensive gameplay, mechanics, and stunning visuals in the 12-minute trailer.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 continues to feature Peter Parker and Miles Morales as the game's two main protagonists.

In addition to showcasing the ability for players to switch between characters depending on the story, the trailer also revealed Spidey donning the symbiote suit, also known as Venom.

The details surrounding how Peter Parker acquires the Venom suit remain unknown, but it is sure to be an intriguing storyline within the game.

In addition to Venom, Peter and Miles will also face off against another iconic villain from the Spider-Man comics, Kraven.

The developers have introduced new storylines and characters, as well as new mechanics for both heroes in the game.

From the trailer, it's revealed that Miles Morales now has wings incorporated into his suit, allowing him to glide through the air for extended periods and distances.

Not only that, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will offer a larger map of New York City compared to its predecessor. Unfortunately, the developers have not revealed the game's release date.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will be exclusively available for the PlayStation 5 (PS5) console.
