Lionel Messi has made his decision. The player known as La Pulga will be joining Inter Miami after deciding not to extend his contract with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).

Messi's contract with PSG ended on June 30 after two seasons with the Paris-based team. Previously, Messi was brought in after negotiations for a contract extension with Barcelona failed.

Messi actually received an offer to play in Saudi Arabia with a fantastic salary. However, he was not tempted by the Rp48 trillion per year salary offered by Al Hilal. Lionel Messi also rejected a return to his former club, Barcelona, which is still dealing with financial issues.

As is known, Inter Miami plays in Major League Soccer (MLS). This will also be the first time for Messi to play in a competition outside of Europe. And Inter Miami owner Jorge Mas stated that the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner will make his debut on July 21.

The question then arises: How much is Messi earning for his move to Inter Miami?

Jorge Mas explained that Miami has been in communication with Messi for a long time. However, the initial discussions were only focused on football considering Messi was still under contract with PSG.

Intensive negotiations were only carried out in the last one and a half years. "One and a half years of intense negotiations. Many conversations with Jorge (Messi's father). I saw it concluded at the end of May. David (Beckham, co-owner of Inter Miami) spoke with Leo, but only about football topics because he was still playing for PSG. He didn't want him to feel any pressure," he said.

Lionel Messi Becomes the Highest-Paid Player in MLS

According to Mas, the negotiation process is now almost complete. He mentioned that during his time at Inter Miami, Messi will not only receive a salary but also additional income from other sectors.

"In terms of the final agreement, the contract with Apple is very important," revealed Jorge Mas.

During his time at Inter Miami, Messi is estimated to earn more than $50-60 million USD or the equivalent of Rp751 - Rp902 billion per year because he will receive commissions from sponsorships with Apple and Adidas.

This figure makes him one of the highest-earning players in MLS, far exceeding the highest-paid player's income in the current MLS stage. As of the latest information, Xherdan Shaqiri of the Chicago Fire is still at the top of the list with total earnings reaching $8.2 million.

Meanwhile, Inter Miami is becoming more and more reminiscent of Barcelona. After being reinforced by Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets, Inter Miami has also recruited Gerardo Martino, or fondly known as Tata Martino, who previously coached Barcelona from 2013 to 2015.

Tata Martino replaces Manchester United legend Phil Neville, who failed miserably with Inter Miami. Neville led Inter Miami to a slump and was already fired in early June.

He is now replaced by Tata Martino, a highly experienced coach. He started his career in 1998 and has managed various clubs such as Barcelona, the Argentine national team, Newell's Old Boys, Mexico, Paraguay, and MLS club Atlanta United.

Martino won the MLS Cup with Atlanta United in 2018. David Beckham welcomed Tata Martino's arrival in the Inter Miami "galaxy," ready to bring in new strength for the upcoming season.

"Tata is a highly respected figure in football, and his track record shows his greatness," Beckham said, as quoted by Metro.

"We believe that his achievements in football and his experience as a coach will inspire our team and make fans happy. I can't wait to see the impact he will have on this team, both on and off the field."

Aligned with Inter Miami's Ambitions

Meanwhile, Inter Miami manager Jorge Mas believes that Tata Martino is in line with the club's ambitions. The club aims to achieve the best results in MLS.

"We are happy to welcome Tata to Inter Miami. We feel that he is the right coach for our ambitions as a club, and we are optimistic that we can succeed together," he said.

"Tata has already coached at the highest level, and we believe his experience will be valuable to us. We plan to compete for titles here."
