Man United Struggles to Find Top Goalkeeper in Europe, Targets Japanese Keeper Zion Suzuki

Man United
Manchester United is eyeing young Japanese national team goalkeeper Zion Suzuki as they struggle to find a great shot-stopper in Europe.

The goalkeeper position has been one of Man United's evaluations in this transfer window. The club, frustrated with David de Gea's ability to play the ball and build attacks from the back, has been in search of a new goalkeeper.

Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana has been the primary target for Man United. The Red Devils reportedly made a £38 million bid for him.

However, Inter Milan rejected the offer and wants Man Utd to increase their bid.

In addition to Andre Onana, Man United is also interested in FC Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa. Another name on their radar is Brighton and Hove Albion's goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

The difficulty in finding a great goalkeeper who can contribute to building attacks from the back in Europe has frustrated Man United.

The English giants have now shifted their focus to Asia, targeting Urawa Reds' goalkeeper and Japanese U-22 national team player Zion Suzuki.

According to Sponichi, Man United has made an official offer of £5 million, equivalent to Rp95.7 billion, on Wednesday (July 5). Negotiations are going smoothly, bringing Suzuki's move to Man United closer.

The report mentioned that Erik ten Hag's team has been observing Zion Suzuki for a long time and has praised his physical abilities and potential as a 20-year-old goalkeeper.

In this season, Zion Suzuki hasn't played in the Japanese league, J League 1, with Urawa. However, he has been fielded in the J League Cup and has made three appearances for the Japan U-21 team.

Zion Suzuki himself is a player of mixed heritage in the Japanese national team. He has a Ghanaian father and a Japanese mother.

Currently, Man United doesn't have a primary goalkeeper as David de Gea's contract expired on June 30. Man United is still in negotiations with De Gea to establish a new partnership with the Spanish goalkeeper.
