In a surprising turn of events, Manchester City has set their sights on a long-standing target of Manchester United in this summer's transfer market after failing to secure the signing of Declan Rice. The English champions are now considering the potential recruitment of Barcelona's star player, Frenkie de Jong.

For the record, The Citizens were actively involved in the chase for Rice's signature not too long ago. The club, who recently achieved treble glory, tabled a £90 million offer to bring the West Ham captain to the Etihad.

However, Manchester City eventually chose to withdraw from negotiations, waving the white flag as Arsenal raised their bid for Declan Rice to £100 million, plus an additional £5 million.

According to reports from Metro, Declan Rice is now on the verge of completing his move to North London. Meanwhile, Manchester City still finds themselves grappling in the transfer market as they need to recruit a new midfielder following Ilkay Gundogan's departure to Barcelona.

The name Frenkie de Jong has surprisingly emerged as one of The Citizens' targets in this transfer window. The player, who was relentlessly pursued by Manchester United last summer, has showcased impressive performances with Barcelona in the 2022/2023 season.

Transfermarkt records De Jong's appearances in a total of 43 matches across all competitions last season. Within those games, the 26-year-old midfielder contributed two goals and four assists.

After failing to acquire his services, it is now Manchester City who has shown interest in recruiting Frenkie de Jong. The Sun reports that Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, envisions the player as part of his squad at the Etihad.

According to Metro, this is not the first time Guardiola has shown interest in De Jong. The Manchester City boss reportedly attempted to sign the Dutch international in 2019 following his outstanding performances with Ajax.

Unfortunately, the plan failed to materialize, and Frenkie de Jong eventually joined Barcelona in a deal reportedly worth €75 million, equivalent to approximately £64 million.

Manchester City Must Prepare Significant Funds

Guardiola seems quite optimistic about the prospect of bringing Frenkie de Jong to the club in the summer transfer window. The 52-year-old coach acknowledges that Barcelona's hierarchy is inclined to selling players due to the club's ongoing financial difficulties.

Nevertheless, Manchester City will likely have to prepare a substantial sum if they want to sway the Catalan giants. Metro predicts that the La Liga champions will expect an offer equivalent to the £90 million proposal that City made to Declan Rice's camp.

Cheaper Alternatives for Manchester City

If they are unwilling to meet Barcelona's expectations, Guardiola's team could shift their focus to a more affordable alternative.

According to transfer expert journalist Fabrizio Romano, as reported by Metro, Manchester City is also considering the option of signing Celta Vigo star Gabri Veiga.

Currently, Veiga has a release clause worth €40 million, or approximately £34 million, in his contract with Celta Vigo. This amount is lower than what City would likely have to pay to recruit De Jong from Barcelona.
